What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin disease caused by overgrowth of skin cells. These cells grow from the bottom then surround the entire layer of skin. When the cells develop, due to this, its moisture also gets depleted and the skin layer becomes dry. After this swelling, redness and sometimes irritation also occur in this layer. Their entire process continues for a period of about one month.
Cause of Psoriasis
The cause of psoriasis has not yet been fully diagnosed, but it is a immune system related problem with T cells and other white blood cells in our body, called neutrophils.
T cell usually moves in the body to protect against foreign substances such as viruses and bacteria but when a person suffers from psoriasis. It is these T cells that accidentally start attacking the healthy skin, causing skin rashes.
Due to psoriasis, these are more active, as T cells increase the production of healthy skin, which leads to formation of more T cells and white blood cells, especially neutrophils. Because of this, the skin becomes warm and start turning red but T cells are not the only responsible behind the cause of psoriasis. Researchers believe that genetic and environmental factors are also responsible for this disease.
Symptoms of Psoriasis
Symptoms of psoriasis may appear differently in each person. These symptoms also depend on what type of psoriasis the person has. Psoriasis surrounds a very small area of the skin, such as the head or elbow or any other part of the body.
The main symptoms of psoriasis are
- Skin rash with swelling
- White crust-like dead skin on red rashes
- Dry skin, cracking and bleeding
- Skin rashes
- Itching and burning sensation around rashes
- Nails thick and stained
- Swelling and pain in joints
However, it is not necessarily necessary that a person suffering from psoriasis shows some of these symptoms. People who suffer from less common types of psoriasis have some different symptoms.
Most individuals go through an entire cycle of psoriasis symptoms. In a person suffering from this, these symptoms appear for a few days or a few weeks then it does disappear and not recognized. But after a few days, these symptoms start appearing again but sometimes these symptoms also disappear completely.
